MD fellowships

About this program

Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) awards MD fellowships for outstanding medical students in Germany to pursue experimentally demanding, hypothesis-driven basic biomedical research (including in silico projects) in an internationally leading laboratory away from their home institution and city. Applicants must have good or very good marks in the first section of the medical examination and subsequent studies, be within eight years of their university entrance qualification (e.g., Abitur), be willing to pause their medical studies and relocate for at least ten consecutive months, and complete the research stay before the third section of the medical exam. The program excludes clinical, applied/industrial development, many disease-treatment studies and most botanical/prokaryotic work unless broadly relevant; there are three annual deadlines (1 Feb, 1 Jun, 1 Oct) with evaluation taking about two months, and applicants uncertain about project fit may submit a one-page summary to BIF prior to applying.
