MMUF Dissertation Grant

About this program

The Mellon Foundation, through the MMUF Advancement Program/Institute for Citizens & Scholars, offers MMUF Dissertation Grants providing up to $30,000 for a 12‑month period to support Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship alumni in completing dissertation writing. Applicants must be MMUF alumni and current Ph.D. candidates who have finished all pre‑dissertation requirements (all coursework, comprehensive exams, dissertation topic approval) and completed most or all fieldwork/research; eligible fields span humanities, social sciences, and select physical sciences. Awards are reduced by other funding to cap total support at $30,000, winners are encouraged to seek institutional support (and may receive the full amount if none is provided), and grantees must arrange their own health insurance while graduate schools are asked to waive tuition.
