About this program

Washington Research Foundation (WRF) offers phased Technology Commercialization Grants to Washington state research institutions to fund translational projects that de-risk technologies and accelerate commercial development, with Phase 1 awards of $10,000–$100,000 (direct costs) and competitive follow‑on funding up to $250,000 (Phase 2) and $1,000,000 (Phase 3). Pre-proposals are accepted on a rolling basis from eligible investigators (faculty, postdoctoral scholars, research scientists, staff, or students) at Washington state nonprofit research institutions; awards are made to the institution, which retains IP under institutional policy, and projects with already‑licensed IP are ineligible. Applicants may request up to 10% for indirect costs; budgets should prioritize translational (not basic) research, regular faculty salary is not allowable while student, postdoc, research staff salaries and non‑salary direct costs are permitted, and selection focuses on commercial potential, clear milestones, and market impact.
