300+ open programsCatalog updated

Corporate research funding is the smallest sponsor category here and the one with the most misconceptions attached.

The listings are dominated by pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies running investigator-initiated study programs: Pfizer, Biogen, Gilead, Ipsen, Merck Animal Health. Alongside them sit technology companies funding academic work near their own products, including Google, Cisco, Amazon Web Services and Two Sigma, and regional employers such as Entergy funding work where they operate. The median award is $10,000 and the largest currently listed is $1,000,000.

Three things separate these from foundation and society awards. Intellectual property terms are negotiated rather than standard, and your technology transfer office needs to see them before you commit. Publication rights are sometimes constrained, usually by a review window rather than a veto. And the relationship is expected to continue, so a first small award is often an audition.

None of that makes corporate money worse. It makes the decision to apply partly your institution's rather than entirely yours, so bring your research office in early.
